Opening for July 5, 2025

MESSAGE

I am pleased to announce the opening of the Tetsuko Kuroyanagi Museum this July in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. This museum will showcase a collection of artworks and antiques that I have carefully gathered over many years.
From an early age, I was influenced by my parents, and through my experiences in television and on stage, I gradually developed a profound appreciation for both Japanese and international art and craftsmanship. Before I knew it, a wide and diverse array of beautiful items had found their way into my life. Each piece holds cherished memories, and simply looking at them brings back the joy and wonder I felt when I first encountered them.
I am truly grateful to now have a space where I can share the charm and stories of these treasures with others. My hope is that visitors will find peace and comfort in the natural beauty of Karuizawa—and perhaps even leave with a smile.
To all those I have met over the years, and to everyone who has supported me on this journey, I extend my heartfelt love and sincere gratitude.

About the Museum
The Tetsuko Kuroyanagi Museum showcases a diverse collection of artworks and antiques that have been lovingly gathered by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi throughout the years. Each piece offers a glimpse into the path she has walked and reflects the warmth and affection that have shaped her life. We hope visitors will be able to connect with her journey and heartfelt vision through these treasures.
In addition to the exhibitions, the museum hosts educational programs, workshops, and talk events that highlight Ms. Kuroyanagi’s achievements, her contributions to society, and the broader beauty of art and culture.
Our aim is to create a space where people of all ages—from children to adults—can learn, find inspiration, and share moments of joy. Through a variety of engaging initiatives, we strive to offer visitors a multifaceted cultural experience.
It would be our greatest pleasure if this museum could serve as a gateway for people to discover and appreciate the wonder of art and culture.

Exhibitions
At the museum, visitors are invited to explore the Tetsuko Kuroyanagi Collection—a reflection of her unique sensibilities and rich personal history. The collection features an eclectic array of items, including glass paperweights, vibrant kimonos, woodblock prints, oil paintings and inu-bako (traditional dog-shaped boxes). Also, Chinese court robes, ceramics from around the world, handbags and accessories, dresses and costumes worn on various occasions, and rare archival materials that trace her footsteps through the decades.
These are not merely works of art, but treasured objects deeply connected to her life—each one carrying its own story. Many were gifts from mentors and friends, or precious finds discovered during her travels. All are filled with unforgettable memories.
We hope that through these exhibits, visitors will experience the warmth, excitement, and inspiration that have shaped Ms. Kuroyanagi’s encounters with the world and its people.

Architecture and Space
The museum was designed by renowned architect Hiroshi Naito. He previously worked on the Chihiro Art Museums in Azumino and Tokyo, where Tetsuko Kuroyanagi serves as a board member. His many acclaimed projects include the Toba Sea-Folk Museum, the Makino Museum of Plants and People, Toraya stores in Kyoto and Akasaka, and the redevelopment of the Shibuya Station area.
The building showcases advanced wooden architectural techniques and was thoughtfully crafted to harmonize with the natural environment and unique character of Karuizawa.
Mr. Naito has brought to life a space that fully embodies the spirit and vision of Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, resulting in a museum that is as inspiring and welcoming as the collection it houses.
